Hewitt and Armitage

Check out Hugh Hewitt's interview with Deputy Secretary of State Dick Armitage . . . in an interesting way, Armitage seems to be pretty consistently taking less pro-administration stances than Hugh is.

If Bush is forced out just before the Republican convention Powell might be nominated and if elected Armitage could be his chief of staff.

My personal theory as to why Powell put up with all the insults is because he thinks that Bush might collaspe and he will be the last man standing. It is how he became Sec. of Defense in the wake of Iran-Contra

Posted by: Alice Marshall | Jun 30, 2004 6:37:34 PM

Powell was never Secretary of Defense. Generals have been stautorily prohibited from becoming SecDef for some decades now.

Posted by: Will Allen | Jun 30, 2004 6:54:15 PM

Indeed -- Powell was National Security Advisor at the end of the Reagan administration.

Sorry, I'm missing how Hugh is more right than Armitage.

I'd love as much as you to pry our national bulldog off the president's lap, because don't we all have the suspicion that he's McCain minus the peepee-cocktail in the Hanoi Hilton credentials?

But I must be missing it in this article. Sheer myopia on my part surely.

Where is Armitage not pro-administration? I read the whole thing, the only place it is even colorable is on Sudan and Libya.

Posted by: Reg | Jun 30, 2004 8:39:49 PM

He chose not to pounce on the 'media bias' angle a la DoD/WH when Hewitt presented the opening. He gave what I would call a "non-admission admission" that the Saddam-AQ stuff is tenuous and hollow. He said Powell was “disappointed in the quality of the intelligence,” whereas the rest of the administration has avoided admitting that the case was weak. He said he didn’t know whether Zarqawi had been in Baghdad, and avoided making something out of Saddam possibly knowing about Zarqawi (would Cheney have been so cautious/honest?). He said that the change with Libya was due to a number of factors. Hewitt offered him the yellowcake issue, which would, in the eyes of some, help validate the war, but Armitage said he knew nothing about it. He wasn’t anti-administration at all, just less bound by the talking points and more averse to spewing nonsense than other administration members and hacks like Hewitt.

Mathew got a high praise from Hugh Hewitt. I appreciate honesty as well. That is the only way we can have a civilized debate.

Hugh is right, MY is one of the few lefties who isn't nuts with rage. I still read Drum, though the National Guard thing was ridiculous, I think he fits in the category too, but his comments sections have become atrocious.
Its campaign season, and hopefully passions will cool after the election and we can go back to normal debate when all the crazies fade away.

"MY is one of the few lefties who isn't nuts with rage."

Zizka and I and others are working on this, with the certainty that events and observations will do much of the heavy lifting.

Just kidding, I think. Roads do get built, kids do get educated, there is apparently some place where politics is separable from the person, and policy is separable from politics. History and experience just seems a weight I can't seem to get free of. I wouldn't be here if I didn't believe Matthew had something to teach me.

But why oh why does my new copy of his book, just unwraped from Amazon, smell like doughnuts? I've confirmed this with several people. If true, it's very odd marketing.
