Thank God

Someone has the guts to stand up against the awful poncho trend. This business has been bothering me for quite some time now, though I suspect that the weather's about to turn too cold for people to be walking around in this stuff all the time.

That's all well and good. But when is someone going to tackle the pernicious fad of the "Urban Sombrero"? Urban Sombrero

Posted by: Anonymous Blogger | Oct 14, 2004 3:11:43 PM

I guess this is an advantage of living in a small mountain town in Colorado, we are not forced to endure bad fashion trends (except of course for those rare individuals that are continuing the trends from 20 years ago). For example, if somebody is wearing a trucker or John Deere hat here in Durango, you know he's actually a real trucker or rancher.

Posted by: Doug-E-Fresh | Oct 14, 2004 3:22:06 PM

I remember those things from the first time around. I can't hate them because they're tangled up in nostalgia.

Posted by: Brian | Oct 14, 2004 3:40:58 PM

Ah yes. The serape of intrigue. You may think it’s just a fad, but try equipping it on a 11-th level half-elven archer in the Forests of Qualinesti . Er. . . sorry, wrong blog.

Posted by: PeterQuince | Oct 14, 2004 4:00:55 PM

At least the poncho is better than that damn one-strap Tarzan thing they used to wear. Next out: the pleated skirt.

Posted by: Handle | Oct 14, 2004 4:08:55 PM

And just wait! All the women who were knitting ugly scarves last year are making hideous ponchos this year. I work at a yarn shop, and some of the bulky yarn ponchos on the needles right now are scary! Part of the problem is that you have to be really tall and thin to pull this look off. Otherwise we call it "Mountains of Bosoms."

Posted by: Contrary Mary | Oct 14, 2004 4:21:05 PM

You poncho-hating froth-at-the-mouth liberals love bashing this great accoutrement. Yet, I hear no plans to replace the great vision of the poncho. The poncho looks great, it is a freedom-wear.

Angry rightwinger.

Posted by: ch2 | Oct 14, 2004 4:25:34 PM

That's a "poncho"? I've never heard the word "poncho" used to describe anything but a sleeveless, hooded disposable raincoat.

Oh well.

Posted by: Cryptic Ned | Oct 14, 2004 4:33:20 PM

The Slate headline reads "Is That a Real Poncho?". I've seen this line used before but I doubt the average reader actually gets the semi-obscure reference (or even realizes that it is a reference).

So, for the record, it's a line from a Frank Zappa song "Cosmic Debris" -- "Is that a real poncho, or is that a Sears poncho?".

Viva Zappa!!

Just more proof that MY is another latte-sipping, military-hating liberal elitist. Real men value the humble yet versatile poncho, and appreciate any woman practical enough to come so equipped. Can MY cross a river or quickly erect an emergency shelter using his high falutin' Gore-Tex North Face jacket? No, of course not! Sneer into your Starbucks cup while you can, Yglesias, for when the Day comes, it will be those who are prepared who will have the last laugh.

Bragan,
you are stepping on my thread. I was doing the right-winger satire here first.
shoo !

;)

Posted by: ch2 | Oct 14, 2004 5:32:22 PM

What'choo talkin' about, ch2? Satire's for liberals who don't have the balls to tell it straight.

(sorry, I missed your post in my haste to play slavering survivalist.)

Frecrissakes, zipdash, read the damn article:

Frank Zappa sang about issues of poncho authenticity in "Camarillo Brillo" ("Is that a real poncho ... I mean Is that a Mexican poncho or is that a Sears poncho?")

You also got the Zappa reference wrong -- it is from "Camarillo Brillo."

Posted by: Thad | Oct 14, 2004 5:54:17 PM

as soon as I saw Carrie wear it on "SandtheC", I feared it would reappear in department stores. Yuck.

Posted by: elizabeth | Oct 14, 2004 6:03:47 PM

Kids, kids, kids -- Zappa used the line in both Camarillo Brillo AND in Cosmik Debris. Google the phrase and all will be revealed.

(Cosmik Debris, at www.cosmik.com, is also the name of an music magazine. Their monthly radio set is short but brilliant.)

Posted by: Mary | Oct 14, 2004 7:30:06 PM

I thought you were dissing actual ponchos for a minute there. Haven't noticed that particular form of nonsense yet.

Real ponchos are great, and have several advantages to umbrellas: more portable; better coverage, no hands, more protection against wind-blown sideways rain.

Posted by: DJW | Oct 14, 2004 8:14:45 PM

Kids, kids, kids -- Zappa used the line in both Camarillo Brillo AND in Cosmik Debris.

Well, yeah, Mary, the poncho line appears in both songs, but the point is "Camarillo Brillo" was released first (on Over-Nite Sensation, rel. 1973). So the line is from "Camarillo Brillo." When he uses it again in "Cosmik Debris," (from Apostrophe, rel. 1974), FZ is making a reference to the earlier song.

Does anyone else remember the woman in the second debate who asked Bush about Americans being unpopular abroad? She was wrapped in a blanket or something. For Christ's sakes, woman, you're on national TV, dress yourself properly.

The old lady making faces in the background of Bush's closing statement was another highlight that night.

friends and I play "punch shawl" aka "shawl brawl"

played like "punch bug," where as I'm sure you are aware the spotter calls out the color and punches his friend.

much fun, particularly when shawl wearer is aware that fun is being had at her expense.

While ponchos may be "over," chickens truly never go out of style.

Posted by: Julian Elson | Oct 15, 2004 2:00:14 AM

Actually, I hated the article. It was written with the same snide sense of superiority that the "head girl" types in high school had as they roundly dismissed the clothes the rest of us had--because they weren't bought at the right stores, because they were too "ethnic", or because they were too modest. (And I went to a high school that was amazingly free of cliquishness and snobbery. . .). For one thing, the assumption that the poncho is "ethnic" and not "authentic" is making somewhat insulting assumptions about who your readers are, given the demographics of NYC & LA. 90% of fashion writing suffers from this head-girl superiority, which is why I usually avoid the genre. People shouldn't follow trends, period. The only truly objectionable thing is that people are being sheep, but that's the one thing that fashion writing can't really complain about. I'm just surprised that Slate was giving valuable room to it, and that Matt is plugging it.
The other thing is, there ain't nothin' wrong with mountains of bosom. You only think someone has to be super skinny to look good in something like this if your definition of good looking is exclusively super-skinny in the first place.

Saheli,
You clearly just hate fashion. That's fine, but then don't pay attention to it. (Ever heard of "corporatism"?)

For fashion reporting, this article was pretty remarkable, I thought. It outlined the process from runway to street, explaining how such a trend gets started and what happens to real women when the clothes arrive to them in the stores. It actually addressed the practical matters of carrying purses, staying warm, and the affordable versions of the latest fad. It even gave a decent history of the garment in gringo fashion.

In all, one of the more intelligent articles on fashion I've read in a long time.
