Get Off The Internet!

Since I'm going to their show later tonight, and since it's blog-relevant, I thought I would share the lyrics of Le Tigre's "Get Off The Internet"

It feels so 80's
Or early 90's
To be political
Where are my friends?
(Get off the internet!)
I'll meet u in the street
(Get off the internet!)
Destroy the right wing
(Get off the internet!)
Now suffice it to say that I think this significantly understates the potential for new media to be an effective tool for political action and organizing.

And significantly overstates the potential of being on "the street" as a tool for political action and organizing.

I KNEW there was a reason I disliked Le Tigre. Besides, do they actually have any good songs? (And I obviously don't include the mediocre Decepticon.)

Le Tigre is no Bikini Kill.

Geez Al, get up on the wrong side (the left?) of the bed? First you bash liberals bashing gay bashers, now you're pickin' on girls?

What's Yr Take On Matt Yglesias,
What's Yr Take On Matt Yglesias?
What's Yr Take On Matt Yglesias,
What's Yr Take On Matt Yglesias?
Misogynist! Genius!
Alcoholic! Messiah!

I don't think I should be obliged to like Le Tigre simply because they are girls, epistemology - I mean, who am I, Larry Summers?

(Besides, I don't especially like the last band Matthew posted about (Arcade Fire), and they are mostly boys. And I DO like Bikini Kill (although my taste in girl music is more Missy Elliot and Alicia Keys).)

but i think so. music online

Al, you don't know the first thing about any of the bands or artists you've referenced. Googling and visiting AMG don't count. You probably didn't even know that Missy Elliot and Alicia Keys are negros.

I like Le Tigre but they are certainly flirting with being overly theory-laden. Bikini Kill was a band for the 'kids' (in the best sense); Le Tigre seems more like a band for the grad students.

"You probably didn't even know that Missy Elliot and Alicia Keys are negros."

I knew that! But I read the newspaper.

And there is this movie floating around late-night
cable with the title::"Bikini Kill" I would never watch such a thing of course, i have my parental guidance set to block any T & A with excessive silicone.

'Le Tigre is no Bikini Kill.'

Quite true... though Bikini Kill is no Sleater Kinney.

Consider tonight's concert an opening act and go see Sleater-Kinney at Nightlight on Friday. They'll be playing stuff off their new album that comes out in May.

Sleater-Kinney is no L7. And by the way Sleater-Kinney, use you maiden name, or use your husband's name, but enough with these damn hyphens.

Posted by: epistemology | Feb 22, 2005 3:46:03 PM

Would it be too snarky to ask if their offering the song as an mp3 anyway?

Are you sure you aren't Al just trolling under an alias? Sleater-Kinney is the name of a road in Olympia, WA where the band was formed, ya moron.

Posted by: JeffI | Feb 22, 2005 4:33:31 PM

Some of you are taking Le Tigre's call to the street far too literally-- how about doing something other than bickering with a bunch of strangers who either already agree with you or never will?

Is local activism/organizing really dead?

Not only is Jeff I a racist ("negro"?) but he is apparently humorless too. Even I got the joke. Sheesh.

Leftist politics ruined punk.

Posted by: Xavier | Feb 22, 2005 6:03:34 PM

Punk was ruined from the start. And that's the whole point.

Posted by: Sid | Feb 22, 2005 6:58:11 PM

Argh! Yer killing me, Sid.

Jeffl:

Sorry Jeff, I was joking. But if not knowing every back road in Washington state makes one a moron, then I'm guilty.

Frankly, I say the Foo Fighters are no Nirvana and Nirvana is no Mission of Burma.

Yep, sounds just as stupid when it's guy bands to say something like that.

Posted by: Amanda | Feb 23, 2005 4:18:08 PM

I distinctly remember MY disparaging street protesters during the presidential campaigns. Did Le Tigre really spark a paradigm shift, MY?

If centrist liberals like Big Picnic were living in their parents' generation, they'd oppose civil disobedience in support of the civil rights struggle on the grounds that it's "counterproductive." I can't think of significant social change that has taken place in this country that WASN'T the result of people in the streets.

Posted by: Peter James Bond | Feb 23, 2005 4:40:03 PM

Le Tigre's advocacy of "taking it to the streets" is officially sanctioned by a publicly traded corporation and thus acceptable.

Posted by: Big Lunchmeat | Feb 23, 2005 5:22:43 PM

L7 is cool. But punk music in general is super-simple to write and play (that goes for male, female, or mixed bands). Sometimes simplicity is good, but I usually prefer people who can *play*. David Grohl can play, but his Nirvana stuff was simple.

If you're hungry for people who can play, check out The Great Kat or Kittie.
