Get a Grip
I think advocates of the "five all-stars for Detroit" theory need to get a grip. The Pistons are 39 and 8. The Mavericks are 38 and 10. The Spurs are 37 and 10. The Heat are 30 and 19. Without taking anything away from the Detroit starting five, they simply haven't achieved a position of unprecedented dominance that would justify bestowing totally unprecedented honors on them. There's no contradiction between saying that Tayshaun Prince is a lot better than the fifth-best player on any other team and saying that he's not an all-star player. There are lots of non-all-stars who are good enough such that if your four other starters were all better than him, your overall team would be pretty beastly.
Some have raised the issue of whether the Pistons could beat the West All-Star team. I'm pretty sure they could, but this is a bit of a red-herring. It reflects the fact that an actual team, assembled to play together and benefitting from such things as practicing together and having game experience alongside each other would have a major advantage over a random collection of talent. What I wonder is how far down the rankings you'd have to go to find an NBA team that would lose to a hastily assembled All-Star squad?
Relatedly, a wacky Pistons-related scheme I would endorse would be just relabeling the Pistons "Team USA" for the 2006 World Championships. I'm fairly certain that, in practice, any good NBA team would perform better than a better-in-paper Team USA that, realistically, isn't going to put in the kind of practice time that an actual team has. As it happens, San Antonio, Dallas, and Phoenix all rely on foreigners for key roles, so none of them could do it.

Probably because the "most dominant team ever" relied more on its hall-of-famers, while this Detroit team seems to excel as a result of the strength and teamwork of all five starters.

It's always been semi-ludicrous, but it made a lot more sense when they were 37 and 5.

I would say that a better case can be made for the 1997 Bulls being awarded unprecedented honors than for any other team (they went 141-23 over two consecutive seasons. How's that for dominance?).

I love teamwork as much as the next guy, but do y'all really believe this?
I mean talent counts for a lot, especially in basketball.
Could the Pistons possibly handle the following lineup:
Mike Bibby, Chris Paul
Mamba, Micheal Redd
Tracy McGrady, Labron James
Shawn Marion, Jermain O'Neil
Brad Miller, Tim Duncan
Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony
I think the Pistons wouldn't stand a chance. They'd be crushed by depth alone.

I'm always fascinated when a bit of utterly non-germance spam slips in. to the comment threads.
1) Is the spammer really, really dumb about how the way threaded conversations take place?
2) Is the spammer just working randomly on news blogs, unaware or not caring of how much that is pissing off all the other participants on the thread?
3) Is the spammer specifically trying to deface the site for no other reason than vandalism.
I'd vote for #2, but my level of confidence in that pick is low.

Much as I love him, especially since that fantastic defensive play against Indiana two years ago, Prince is not an all-star and suggesting as much is crazy.

If we're choosing swingmen from the Eastern conference, admittedly the competition is pretty thin. But I'd take RJ over Prince in a heartbeat, and in any event Bosh and Arenas and Pierce aren't more worthy at other positions? If Detroit was in the western conference no one would be arguing that all 5 starters were worthy of the All-star game. Then again, they wouldn't be 39-8, either.

Pistons are now 19-5 against the East, and...21-3 against the West. I think they'd be doing just fine if they were in the West.

dammit someone beat me to the requisite darko joke.
I think if you put _any_ NBA team in as team USA that wouldn't be losing key foreigners, they would win the gold, with the possible exception of New York, Charlotte, and the rest of the, say, bottom five. The problem is there are so many foreigners these days, it would be hard to find one that didn't have its chemistry significantly altered -- Detroit and Miami being the only two really good ones to qualify, as you point out.
