Hart

Christ. If you think John Kerry's a bit dull, you ought to get a load of Gary Hart. Maybe he could warm up crowds for Kerry and make the nominee look good by comparison.

OT, opportunity cost knocks. Deaths in Darfur not prevented due to Iraq invasion.

Thought you might appreciate this LBJ photo as well.

That didn't work out so well with Lieberman, why would Hart be any better?

When I was an undergrad at Northwestern back in 1988, Gary Hart came and spoke at the school. It was after the Monkey Business scandal and he had dropped out and then re-entered the race. He wasn't going to win and everyone knew it. But he gave an incredible speech. Substantive, impassioned, riveting. And then he took questions and answered them all -- even the stupid college-student legalize pot kind of questions -- with grace and respect. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the man because of that performance. What I'm saying is: he's better than you make out.

Speaking of Gary Hart, is it true that Kerry's swift boat in 'Nam was named "Monkey Business"? No? I bet that won't stop Brent Bozell or someone else on the "Truth Squad" from saying so.

After all, it must be true. I read it on the internet.

praktike, I think there's plenty of blame to go around.

And removing the Iraq war from the debate, there's still extreme resistence on the part of certain powerful members of the international community towards doing anything to help the people in Darfur - and mind you, this is after 2 million people have already been killed in the last decade, notwithstanding the current Janjaweed-led, Kharthoum approved massacres currently happening.

Arab League Tries to Brake Campaign for Sanctions on Sudan

BTW, I would never argue for sanctions as a panacea, but something should be done to pressure Kharthoum.

The most ludicrous idea I ever heard was to enact sanctions on the janjaweed.

I mean, give me a fucking break!

Posted by: praktike | Jul 28, 2004 4:53:12 PM

It's not sanctions against the Janjaweed. It's sanctions against Kharthoum.

Still ludicrous?

Sen. Kerry's comments on the matter (not Hart, but Darfur):
http://blog.johnkerry.com/blog/archives/002154.html#002154

"Finally, I believe in the value of American leadership in the world. Today, a massive humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Darfur, Sudan, where 300,000 people or more may die in the coming months. This administration must stop equivocating. These government sponsored atrocities should be called by their rightful name – genocide.

"The government of Sudan and the people of Darfur must understand that America stands prepared to act, in concert with our allies and the UN, to prevent the further loss of innocent lives. The United States must lead the UN Security Council in sanctioning the planners and perpetrators of genocide and authorizing an international humanitarian intervention. As president, I will bring the full weight of American leadership to address this crisis and to promote the democratic hopes of people throughout Africa, Haiti and the Caribbean."

Not if the Arab League has anything to do with it.
