Convention...
...so I've got some pretty apocalyptic feelings about this whole convention I'm hitting up tomorrow. Think there's gonna be a terrorist attack or, more likely, bloody riots. If so, I'll cover that. If not, what do people want to hear about beyond the fact that the president and his surrogates are lying? Should I just try and find rube delegates and mock them? Only did a little of that in Boston and it was pretty fun. This time we'll have a bigger city and rubier delegates?

I'll be curious to know how rank and file Republicans react to messengers that are nowhere near their mainstream. Tell us if you hear any grumbling, or if it is all a big love fest.
Oh, and be sure to mention that it is all completely stage managed in every single dispatch.

Counter bigmedia. I didn't watch the last convention, and don't much care what goes on at the podium. I loved the side forum stuff you did, and presume Laura Mylroie will be there somewhere.
And if the demonstrations get really rough, tell us the truth about them. Though avoid truncheon-derived brain-damage or lungs scarred with non-lethal crowd-control devices.

Adam Nagourney (sp?) last week said that the GOP will blame the Dems for anything bad that comes from protests. Of course, the Dems have nothing to do with any of this, so dear Adam again is doing the GOP a favor by passing along any and all mudslinging as fact.
You should try and find some angry, protesting Republicans and report on this.

I would like to see you cover President Bush's resignation, or at least how I won the Mega Millions lottery.

Timothy,
I doubt delegates are "rank and file" Republicans. I'm sure they're much more conservative and Dubya-friendly that the average Republican voter.

Agent provocateurs, Matt. Agent provocateurs.

This amusing article from Slate describes a phenomena that will be present at the convention and might be fun to write about.

What kind of access will you have? I had been hoping some media would canvas the delegates to get their opinions on the truth value of the claims of the scumbag liars for bush. Given that bush himself has now specifically stated he does not believe Kerry has lied about his military service, I wonder how delegates will choose to handle this question? I imagine some will "pull a Cheney," by which I mean, not that they will obscenely shower their inquisitor with unspeakable curses, but, will they contradict bush's received wisdom (as in Cheney's anti-family position on gay marriage)? When faced with a SBV supporter, it would be handy to have specific questions about this or that thoroughly-debunked SBV claim. Also, if they're good at parroting dear Leader's line (i.e., ALL 527s bad), then ask for examples of anti-Bush slanders.

For some reason this makes me think of Elizabeth Bishop :
In your next letter I wish you'd say
where you are going and what you are doing;
how are the plays, and after the plays
what other pleasures you're pursuing:
It would be impolite to quote the whole insubstantial thing.

Matt,
Please tell us whether you find reservations at the fancy restaurants generally available. (Let's hope you have a good expense account!) I'm wondering whether this might be a good time to pop in.

Interview the prostitutes!

Take pictures. I hear they're worth a thousand words.

Yo, Al! Long time no see. I'm still hoping to hear your explanation of why you have such a low opinion of George Soros -- by almost every standard, an admirable guy. What you said on Monday or Tuesday was that he had made his billions off the third world poor.
That, of course, is not a free market Republican position, but rather a LaRouchie, Marxist, Naderite, or right-wing nationalist position.
Al, that wasn't your true opinion slipping out, was it? You aren't by any chance a Commie trolling Dem sites for the Republican dollar, are you?
(Ladies and gentlemen of the thread, this may seem OT, but I'm trying to respond to Al's dump-and-run practice of disappearing whenever things get sticky for him.)

Zizka, give Al all the hell you want. Meanwhile, I'll anxiously await news of whether Matt finds reservations at the fancy restaurants generally available.

Matt,
Rubes, and lots of 'em. It would be best if they were from the south, preferably Chamber of Commerce types from Mississippi or Oklahoma. "Jesus Loves W" buttons on the lapels of their 60% poly-blend suits. You know how us condescending liberals love to sneer at "normal" people.

As a Republican who watched all of the Demo convention and reads blogs on both sides of the isle, I would like more honest reporting of what the delegates really feel this election is about. What makes them vote for Bush? What is their number one priority? Is it the economy, health care, terror?
Posted by: Leila | Aug 27, 2004 8:09:37 PM
If a story comes out of the convention at all it will be violence (to be blamed on Democrats), and the probably-untold story will be provocateurs and police incitement. I don't think that Matt's the right guy for this kind of investigation (I'd be better, no joke), but if he has contacts with any of Harvards transpro black flag anarchists, he should activate them.

Matt, howzabout cornering some of the moderate Republicans whose tolerant, big-tent platform language got tossed and ask them the following leading question:
"Do you realize that you will never get moderate language in the platform unless you make your threats credible thhrough a floor fight?"
Maybe, through seemily innocuous prodding, you can provoke just that.

How about passing out copies of your famous "Bush is Dumb and That is Bad for America" column and seeing how delegates react?
Posted by: praktike | Aug 27, 2004 8:45:45 PM
See if you can dig up some libertarianish republicans and see what they think of the direction the party is going. There must be a couple left.
Find some fundy types and ask em what they think about their boys (Delay, Robertson, etc.) being kept hidden in the attic while very unrepresentative guys like Arnold get the limelight.

Looks like a virtual bomb has just gone off in DC: The FBI is investigating an alleged Israeli spy working for Douglas Feith at the Pentagon.
The story was broken by CBS, but all the majors are reporting on it now.

If you cannot find the prostitutes with AIDS trying to infect Republican hypocrites, maybe you can find some anarchos dressed in Khakis sending blue-haired Kansas republicans to uninhabitable parts of New York.

I'd like to see you cover how much of the Republican platform is not ready for prime time. With Giulian, McCain, and Arnold doing the RnC Girlie version, I doubt we will see the real RNC.
Posted by: the pet goat | Aug 27, 2004 9:40:04 PM
The only sure bet regarding the RNC Convention is that the balloons will drop on time, en masse.
