In With The New
Demonstrating more precociousness than young Ezra Klein, even younger Zoë Holbo discovers the Shins, and good for her. Meanwhile, last night I heard Metric for the first time, opening for the Walkmen (an impressively clean-cut group of young men for a rock band). Fantastic stuff. Plus, like all good things they're from Canada.

FYI - The singer from Metric also does vocals for Broken Social Scene, who are just awesome.

The Shins have a lame live show. Or maybe I'm just getting too old for sappy pop-rock.

The Walkmen are peerless. Love The Walkmen.

Will second the props for the Walkmen. Their debut CD, "Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone" is an album for the ages. The new one, "Bows & Arrows" is fantastic as well, but the first is unreal.
anyway, Matthew, your next step is a band called Destroyer:

Haha, I thought I saw The Famous Matt Yglesias at that show. Wasn't sure it was you though, your hair looked different.
The Walkmen are all originally from DC... judging from the way they dress, they're probably all the children of spies of diplomats who grew up in Georgetown or Bethesda and went to private schools. Not that there's anything wrong with that, they're a great band.
I agree about Metric, thier lead singer is quite a talent. She's one of those people who owns the stage the minute they walk on it. If this indie rock thing doesn't work out for her, I could easily see her making it big on Broadway.

ah! i also first heard metric when they opened for the walkmen. thought they blew the healiners away actually - maybe i found the walkmen disappointingly clean-cut. come to think of it, i haven't listened to their album since that show. go figure, i guess...

What you guys should really check out is the album "Satanic Panic in the Attic" by of Montreal. For a good example of how good these guys are, also check out the song Don't Ask Me To Explain. Warning : You'll have this song stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

That Of Montreal album is one of the best of the year, no question.

Ahh, St. Albans. Attended by Al Gore, John Kerry, Evan Bayh, Harold Ford Jr., Neil Bush, King Abdullah of Jordan, Jesse Jackson Jr., John Warner, Brit Hume...
Actually, the Walkmen deserve credit for dressing true to their roots, I guess.
