Iyad Allawi

Along with dissent-is-treason, the other big New Idea the Bush campaign has come up with is to start using Iyad Allawi as a campaign surrogate. If you point out that Bush is lying through his teeth about the situation, now you are not only impugning the honor of the CEO President, but also of the Bold Leader of the Iraqi People, a longtime Fighter for Freedom, and genuinely good dude, Prime Minister of a Sovereign Nation. But of course as Ken Layne points out, Allawi is a ruthless scumbag, utterly without scruples, clearly willing to do or say whatever he needs to in order to maintain his grasp on power. Meanwhile, he was made Prime Minister of Iraq by . . . George W. Bush, so his endorsement of Bush's account of the situation in Iraq lacks a certain degree of credibility. Let John Kerry appoint new governments all around the world, and then you'll see support from "foreign leaders" like you've never dreamed of.

I don't want to nitpick about typos, but this sentence has a pretty glaring one:

Allawi is a ruthless scumbag, utterly without scruples, clearly willing to do or say whatever he needs to in order to maintain his grasp on power.

I think you typed "Allawi" when you meant "Bush." Oh wait. . .

Yeesh, it's bad enough that we fret over "red" and "blue" states, but now we have to worry about "red"/"blue" countries too? Bush already has Iraq and Afghanistan. Kerry's gonna need to invade at least two countries to close that gap.

My choices: Iran (which is in need of a regime change anyway) and Cuba (lock up that Florida vote for 2008, baby!).

I guess it was also unpatriotic to point out the obvious about Lon Nol, back in the day.

Posted by: son volt | Sep 25, 2004 12:07:13 PM

Pointing out the obvious is now against the rules. Didn't you all get the memo? If it's even remotely possible that someone on Bush's team subjectively believes his pronouncements to be true, it is still not polite to question this man's veracity. Now I know why he's comfortable in the company of money making evangelists. Bastards.

Is there anyone who might have been a realistic choice for Prime Minister of Iraq about whom this allegation couldn't have been made? This seems close to an argument that we never have to believe anything any Iraqi Prime Minister says that we don't like.

Alternatively: we're right to be sceptical about anything any Iraqi PM says that seems designed primarily to help him keep his job. But if this is the case, the specific allegations about Allawi are just color; they don't actually strengthen your argument.

Screw both of em.

They are both enabling idiotic policy that is undermining our security and bleeding our treasury.

Niether have done a single thing to earn the reverance.

"Is there anyone who might have been a realistic choice for Prime Minister of Iraq"

Sistani's first choice, the nuclear physicist Saddam had had in jail for twenty years, might have had a tad more credibility than the exile CIA hustler/assassin/thug.

But hey, what do I know about politics.

Posted by: bob mcmanus | Sep 25, 2004 5:15:22 PM

One thing I haven't heard mentioned is that Allawi endorsed that clearly bogus Saddam intelligence memo reported in the Sunday Telegraph (the one in which astoundingly mentioned both hooking up with Mohammed Atta and trying to get uranium from Africa).

A quote from the Con Coughlin article about this memo:
___________
Although Iraqi officials refused to disclose how and where they had obtained the document, Dr Ayad Allawi, a member of Iraq's ruling seven-man Presidential Committee, said the document was genuine.

"We are uncovering evidence all the time of Saddam's involvement with al-Qaeda," he said. "But this is the most compelling piece of evidence that we have found so far. It shows that not only did Saddam have contacts with al-Qaeda, he had contact with those responsible for the September 11 attacks."

Something to think about when assessing Dr. Allawi's credibility.

Every once in a great while, Maureen Dowd earns her living. Sunday's column:
It's heartwarming really.

President Bush has his own Mini-Me now, someone to echo his every word and mimic his every action.

For so long, Mr. Bush has put up with caricatures of a wee W. sitting in the vice president's lap, Charlie McCarthy style, as big Dick Cheney calls the shots. But now the president has his own puppet to play with.

Allawi might be a horrible person (or not) but using Ken Layne's article--full of unsourced accusations and rumors, as a reference for Allawi's 'ruthless scumbag'-ness seems a little irresponsible. Do you really want to endorse this type of attack?
