When Life Gives You Bad Apples

Via Suburban Guerilla, an Australian press report notes that "Video footage of US military treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay will reveal many cases of substantial abuse as 'explosive as anything from Abu Ghraib,' a lawyer said today." Now perhap the lawyer is wrong, but given everything we've found out in the months since the Abu Ghraib stuff first broke, my gut tells me he isn't. The administration is refusing to release the tapes.

The Left refuses to view a video tape showing a living disable woman responding to her loving parents. But, they have no problem with releasing a tape which will hurt our national image and damage the moral of our troops by showing "abuse" (two pairs of panties on an arab's head!) of terrorists.

I'm surprised the administration didn't release the video late Friday afternoon. Even if they released it today, what impact would it have with the Schiavo charade dominating the airwaves and the Michael Jackson trial waiting impatiently in the wings to resume its place in the center to the TV media's attention?

Also why does the left refuse to view my video where I get man topped by Jeff Gannon?

Al, you really get around. It's almost like this is your job! Here's one difference between war prisoners and people in persistent vegetative states: according to neurologists, the latter aren't aware of what's going on around them, or happening to them.

Well, Al, if the Administration just chooses to release a heavily edited tape, culling 6 minutes from 4+ hours of footage, to make it look like our Gitmo prisoners are spending their time playing volleyball and sipping pina coladas ... then, yes, this member of the "Left" would have a problem with releasing that tape.

But can we please have a link to those of the "Left" who don't want even the edited Schiavo tape released?

wonder if this is the same stuff Seymor Hersh supposedly refused to release.

Posted by: cleek | Mar 21, 2005 12:48:02 PM

I don't recall that Hersh refused to release it; he said it existed, but I don't recall his having custody of it. If I'm wrong, of course, please correct me. (Can't really imaging Hersh sitting on something like that, as a matter of his character.)

Oh, goody.

The Hersh stuff was from Abu Ghraib, including the raping of the boy and sexual mistreatment of female prisoners. The Senate committee, including most memorably to me, Lindsay Graham, saw it and agreed it should not be released.

With 200k+ Americans in Islamic/Arab countries, I reluctantly agree. It would serve any purpose that would outweigh the damage and dangers.

For the record, I aso think Bush/Rumsfeld & crew should be in Belgium on trial or permanently imprisoned.

The Hauge is in the Netherlands, Bob! Geez, the Left doesn't even know basic geography.

Posted by: Al | Mar 21, 2005 1:51:01 PM

I'm not sure where The Hauge is, Al, but The Hague is in Netherlands.

Next time you're intent upon playing gotcha, reconsider before you make a fool of yourself again.

Bragan, I'm fluent in Dutch therefore I rarely think of The Hague using the English word, sorry.

But McManus wants Bush on trial in Belgium because only in Belgium can a convict be sentenced to being devoured by mice.

Thanks for the Hersh stuff, btw. They raped a boy & broke out the camcorder for that? Sick little fucks. No mice for them---rats!

Though mice, arguably, are the more lingering death. Eugene Volokh endorses the mice approach, but worries about "huge costs on the legal system." Mice ain't cheap!

only a lib would consider a simple spelling mistake in the comments section of a blog as an act of a fool. Hey, when in doubt, play grammar nazi.

That's "Nazi."

Another: "The Hersh stuff was from Abu Ghraib, including the raping of the boy and sexual mistreatment of female prisoners. The Senate committee, including most memorably to me, Lindsay Graham, saw it and agreed it should not be released."

Bob:
"With 200k+ Americans in Islamic/Arab countries, I reluctantly agree. It would serve any purpose that would outweigh the damage and dangers."

Of course, similar video's are probably moving through the Arab world. ISTR that Abu Graibh was common knowledge in Iraq, while the US public was still ignoratn.

"For the record, I aso think Bush/Rumsfeld & crew should be in Belgium on trial or permanently imprisoned. "

Bob, if such tapes had been released back in 2004, that might have been possible. As it is, of course, the criminals are in an excellent position to get away with it.
