Post!

I really should have posted something today, but I'm stuck in the middle of a combination of banking issues and some last-minute tax panic. I'll come up with something soon.

"Thanks for the info. I will only refresh every 10 minutes now."

That is why god created RSS readers.

I've never found panic a particularly useful emotion when doing math problems, and taxes are nothing more than a large, tedious, badly written word-problem in math. Judging by your amusing attempt a while back to solve an infinite series problem, math isn't your best subject at the best of times. So go smoke a cigarette. Relax.

"I've never found panic a particularly useful emotion when doing math problems"

You've obviously never attempted Xtreme! math.

Turn out to be in better shape tax-wise than I'd believed. I thought I'd forgot to do my state taxes. It turns out I just forgot to mail the envelop sitting in my drawer.

Posted by: Matthew Yglesias | Apr 11, 2005 2:32:59 PM

I wish I just had "tax panic" instead of "tax holy shit I owe lots of money." Maybe it's time to become a free lunch conservative...

Posted by: Atrios | Apr 11, 2005 2:36:27 PM

Atrios,
If you converted to a Bush schill, I am sure they could arrange for you to get Armstrong Williams-type money. Turn down the heat on Delay and they might even write a loophole for you in the tax code.

Posted by: theCoach | Apr 11, 2005 2:39:45 PM

Petey,
I have tried a bunch of RSS readers, and I still find them lacking. Currently using www.start.com/1 to do RSS-like browsing. You have to click show, if you are interested.
It is a Microsoft beta project, so for those that find that kind of thing horrifying, consider that a warning.

Posted by: theCoach | Apr 11, 2005 2:45:06 PM

Surely, Atrios paid - voluntarily - much more than just the bare minimum required by the tax code. After all, if he wants everyone else to be required to pay more to the IRS, why wouldn't he be voluntarily paying more himself? Right?

Matthew too! One hopes that all good liberals have the courage of their convictions and pay, what, double, triple the amount of taxes that they "owe".

"Currently using www.start.com/1 to do RSS-like browsing."

Switch to OS X, and then check out NewsFire. You won't do it, of course, but you'd be happier if you did.

Posted by: Petey | Apr 11, 2005 3:00:50 PM

Petey, I might be happier, but you are right that I won't. My livelihood depends on the Microsoft behemoth, like it or not.

Al, I am hoping that is zizka, cuz that is just stupid, and suprisingly beneath you.

Posted by: theCoach | Apr 11, 2005 3:28:38 PM

It's fun to watch Kerry in the Bolton hearing. After all that awful awkwardness on the campaign trail, it's nice to see him in a situation where he can actually be good at his job again.

And wouldn't it be even more fun to live in that alternate universe where Al Franken runs and beats slimy Norm Coleman?

Posted by: Petey | Apr 11, 2005 3:38:22 PM

how bout this:

"Before I let you go, Justice Scalia referred to his collegues on the court as "Black Robed Masters". Isn't that Incredible? ... Well, I heard a minister the other talking about the great injustice and evil of the men in white robes, the Ku Klux Klan, that roamed the country in the south. And they did great wrong to civil rights and to morality. And now we have black-robed men, and that's what you're talking about. The subtitle of the book is "How The Supreme Court Is Destroying America", by Mark Levin. Introduction by Rush Limbaugh, and that outta tell you something."

that's James Dobson, interviewing an author today, on his radio show. Marshall has a link to the audio.

Posted by: cleek | Apr 11, 2005 3:46:38 PM

Oh, come on Coach, admit it, you're never surprised by my comments!

Can't we at least play out the argument? Why shouldn't liberals who advocate a higher tax rate at least pay their taxes at that higher rate? I mean, just because we conservatives haven't permitted the tax rates to rise, why should that exempt you liberals from paying what you consider to be the proper tax rate?

(OK, OK, for the record, I don't really care about the actual tax rate; to me, the "real" tax rate is the amount of spending we have, which we will have to pay for one way or another at some point. So spending reductions are the only things I really care about. Nonetheless, don't tell Karl about that!)

Posted by: Al | Apr 11, 2005 3:47:08 PM

Actually, Al, I generally find your comments to be useful on this board. Not right, but useful.

Free Rider Problem

I agree that GWB has been a tax raiser, and only wish that he had used those raised taxes to do something good, rather than prolong a recession. For what it is worth, I think real take home pay across the quintiles should be more heavily weighted in determining what the press calls a recession. I am not qualified to speak towards how economists use that definition.

Petey,
Just curious, if Microsoft were to come out with a genuinely better OS than OSX, would you switch?
Consider that it is better enough, as measured by you so as to offset a new learning curve, but the one thing you could not be certain of, was whether or not Apple might leapfrog ahead in the future?

Posted by: theCoach | Apr 11, 2005 4:12:41 PM

"Just curious, if Microsoft were to come out with a genuinely better OS than OSX, would you switch?"

I was seriously thinking about switching away from Apple in the dark days of the late 90's. If XP had come out while Apple was still peddling OS 9 and still running in circles about the future, I'd almost definitely have bitten the bullet and gone over to the dark side.

But I don't expect to be faced with that kind of decision again in the near or mid-term. OS X is just starting to enter its sweet spot. And Microsoft's OS development process seems as confused now as Apple's did in those late 90's dark days.

Posted by: Petey | Apr 11, 2005 4:31:14 PM

I've got to agree with Petey. You couldn't get me within ten feet of a Mac before OS X came along. My family now has three of them. Longhorn had better be to XP what XP was to Windows 98, or we're not likely to go back.

As for taxes, I'd be happy if folks just paid what they owed; isn't there about a couple hundred billion that is never paid that, by the rules, should be paid? (That was a few years back -- I wonder if the IRS makes such estimates any more?)

Posted by: modus potus | Apr 11, 2005 6:20:31 PM

modus,
I think Longhorn better be a much bigger improvement than that. More Windows 95 to 3.1.

The people hyping it are using the DOS --> Windows analogy, which may be more apt. In my opinion the important stuff will be WinFS which was delayed until after longhorn, but it will be interesting to see what they put together. It should be good for Mac people as well.
