SC Legislators Think Wife-Beating Is Hilarious

Via Tim Lee, how does the South Carolina legislature debate domestic violence?

According to a tape of the meeting obtained by The State newspaper, Altman asked why the bill’s title — “Protect Our Women in Every Relationship (POWER)” — just mentioned protecting women. Harrison suggested making the bill the “Protecting Our People in Every Relationship” Act, or “POPER.”

A voice on the tape can be heard pronouncing it “Pop her.” Another voice then says, “Pop her again,” followed by laughter.

Somehow South Carolina manages to be a consistent leader in the man-murders-woman statistical category.

Stoopid yahoos.

I highly recommend watching the whole video on MSNBC online. It eventually becomes clear that what he finds so offensive about cock fighting seems to be that people pay to watch. Beating the shit out of your girlfriend is apparently much less morally suspect so long as you don't charge admission.

People elected this guy!?!

Posted by: Happy Fishes | Apr 22, 2005 12:57:28 PM

while the guy's views are hardly commendable, he was in fact right to oppose the bill since it was a terrible one, with almost no concession to real world realities (ie the vast majority of abused women who would in fact be hurt by the bill's arbitrary prescriptions for domestic violence)...good intentions does not always equal good results nor as in this case in SC, bad intentions equal bad results...
