The Princess of the Beach

18243568_f8351e861d_mI have a new look for my 24th year on this earth, featuring shorter hair and hipster glasses. At the Outer Banks I realize I was lacking in the cap department, and picked up a white visor emblazoned with the word "Princess" at one of those crummy beach shops for irony value. The result: The Princess of the Beach, immortalized thanks to the digital photography of Susan and now here on the Internets for anyone who may still read this site to enjoy.

In addition, here's my most recent TAP Online column.

Heh.

It's not a flattering picture.

and i've got more photos here.

Posted by: catherine | Jun 9, 2005 2:57:06 PM

Somehow I am reminded of Oliver Willis

Posted by: bob mcmanus | Jun 9, 2005 3:43:52 PM

you put on a few pounds in your older age, Matt, or is that just the pic? :)

Posted by: Goldberg | Jun 9, 2005 4:55:34 PM

You're also looking a bit reddish -- you're getting too much sun there, son. It'll make you old before your time. Better up the count on your SPF.

Posted by: S.Anderson | Jun 9, 2005 5:51:59 PM

Y'all are pretty rough. Where are your beach photos?

Posted by: Nico | Jun 9, 2005 9:59:37 PM

Wouldn't this be your 25th year on earth? Otherwise, I agree with Nico.

Posted by: quietstorm | Jun 10, 2005 3:51:39 AM

I hate your facial hair -- But less than I hate scoop.

Bring back rosy-cheeked boy-faced Matt.

Posted by: Ikram | Jun 10, 2005 9:40:56 AM

MY's old, even young Ezra Klein will be looking long in the tooth soon. Who's the next young blog thing?

Posted by: Kriston | Jun 10, 2005 10:15:43 AM

"...featuring shorter hair and hipster glasses."

Don't you mean Capps glasses?

Posted by: Petey | Jun 10, 2005 11:12:18 AM

First thought upon seeing the picture -- You should be glad you draw a different crowd than Fark because they would go to town with photoshopping that visor.

And the second -- As far as "blogger with ironic/embarrassing hat", Andrew Sullivan still has you beat. Might be a contest you don't mind losing, though.

Posted by: Becks | Jun 10, 2005 11:01:42 PM

I totally have those glasses.

Posted by: belle waring | Jun 11, 2005 9:13:49 AM

Sunblock, my good man. You look a bit roasted.

Posted by: RC | Jun 11, 2005 10:49:16 AM

Matt,
If you want to be a liberal star on TV, you need to lose some wt. You don't want to look like the left version of Jonah. Someone commented on your weight at Atrios when you appeared on CSPAN.

Posted by: ecoast | Jun 11, 2005 12:01:11 PM

ecoast, that's rude. You, and the commenter at Atrios, have no idea whether Matt has gained weight or not. As has been mentioned before, he's quite a bit taller than a head-and-shoulders shot would lead you to guess. If he has gained weight, I'm sure he's noticed and decided how and whether to deal with it without your help.

Posted by: quietstorm | Jun 11, 2005 12:18:40 PM

Rude, and completely off base. I think he's a handsome looking man, under that tragically misguided facial hair. I'm just sayin', is all.

Posted by: seb | Jun 11, 2005 4:38:37 PM

Actually, I think you look pretty hot in the pic, Matt. How about a full body shot?

Posted by: Gay Republican | Jun 11, 2005 8:39:36 PM

Shave the moustache and go for the Lincoln beard. Lincoln beard + visor + radiant glow/sunburn = knocking boots with Katty Kay and/or Andrew Sullivan. Pasty Brits love beach cred and Honest Abe. Pundit Porn is so hottttt!

Posted by: joejoejoe | Jun 12, 2005 6:45:49 AM

I've been scratching my head for a day or two: 'Who the hell does he look like' - then I read the comments and it hits me! Aha!

You should grow your beard longer and be deep under the earth forging mighty giant-slaying swords! And you need a hat! With horns and stuff! And an axe taller than you are! Yeah!

In fact, I think I played your character in Balder's Gate 2.

I'm curious: was the white version of the cap the only version you noticed, or did you pass up other colors? It is rather tempting to photoshop it into some really awful pastel color. But perhaps your are intentionally exhibiting a certain tasteful restraint in the irony department.

Posted by: Saheli | Jun 13, 2005 3:00:47 AM

Twenty-four? To paraphrase Princess Leia, aren't you kind of young to be a pundit?

I've got furniture older than you. Lots of it.

Posted by: cmac | Jun 13, 2005 12:55:51 PM

You look like a young Andrew Sullivan.

Twitch, who do you think taught me all that it wasnt just bitchtina. Are you still on the happy rock. I rember you were on year 3 1/2 the first time i met you so that must make this year 5 1/2. Wheres the picture of you with herpes all over your face That would be alot more acurate depiction of you.
