Serenity
Okay, this is totally corrupt, but apparently I can get free tickets to a screening of Serenity if I agree to post the following summary:
Joss Whedon, the Oscar® - and Emmy - nominated writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE, ANGEL and FIREFLY, now applies his trademark compassion and wit to a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future in his feature film directorial debut, Serenity. The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family –squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.
As I was saying the other day, Firefly, the short-lived TV show on which this movie is based, was great. So the film version should be great too. So you should go see it. And the Serenity people should give me free tickets. For what it's worth, I think Serenity probably should have been the title of the TV show, too. And word on the street is that if the movie's successful the show may come back to TV or else the story gets continued as more movies or something.

Word on the street over here is that the contractual arrangements don't allow the show to come back onto TV, but rather entitle the studio to distribution rights for one or two more films.

One of the characters--Jayne--is Animal from Full Metal Jacket. He apparently has a mirror in his attic that IS aging, because he looks exactly the same.
I am very disappointed to hear that there won't be another TV series. Great idea, great writing. And, especially, great characters.

I wish it could come back as a show. Looking at Whedon's track record, he's made much, much better TV shows than movies. But maybe Serenity will reverse that trend.

I like Firefly. I think I have seen three episodes on the Scifi channel. I ran across the show by accident as I was channel surfing. I think I like the whole space-cowboy thing. I probably won't go see serenity at the movies but I most likely will add the movie to my DVD collection.

My son introduced me to the show. (He's introduced me to all manner of TV shows since I quit watching at the end of the Seinfeld run.) My first reaction was to only see the similarities between it and (one of my son's other favorites) Farscape. After several episodes, I think I preferred Firefly. But it's been back and forth and the real point is that it was surprisingly good TV.

Saw Alien4 (written by Whedon) again recently. Didn't dislike it half as much as the first time I saw it. Had lots of fun trademark Whedonesque snarky dialogue and it had an interesting new wrinkle, since the ragtag crew of smugglers (Ron Perlman, the French dude from 'Delicatessen,' Winona Ryder, some leading-man type who gets offed startlingly early in the bloody proceedings, and a couple others, all in a rickety old ship called "The Betty") is clearly a dystopic first-draft of the Firefly/Serenity crew.

Except that Aliens 4 absolutely blew. I think I read somewhere that, apart from a couple of Whedonesque lines, they changed the hell out of it -- I don't think Whedon was happy with the result.
Whedon wrote the screenplay of Toy Story, for which his one documented contribution was the great line (very Whedonesque) "Send in the frog!"

I fell asleep in the middle of Star Wars, I'm not really a sci-fi fan, and I hate Westerns.
Despite all of that, I fell in love with Firefly. I actually shed tears when it was canceled. I got to see Serenity over the summer, and I thought it was an incredible movie - not only with loads of action, both the kicking/fighting/shooting kind and space battle kind, tremendous tension and darkness, and also funny as hell.
I may actually start praying for this movie to do well, because I'm not ready to stop hearing about the crew and what happens to them.

I'm geeked about "Serenity" but it'll be like methadone to "Firefly"'s heroin.
Whedon claims the malign influence of the French (or at least one Frenchman in particular) is responsible for Alien 4 sucking. There's a big ol' interview with him at the onion avclub www.theonionavclub.com from a few years ago where he lays out his defense.
