I think it's life imitating The Wire imitating life. Wasn't season 3 still based on thinks Burns & Simon knew from their careers?
Also savethewire.com used to have audio of a phoner David Simon did with a Chicago radio station, where he said that either New York or New Jersey cops had discovered a drug dealing crew using the Barksdale's pager & coded phone number tricks.

Have I been reading blogs to long when the first thing I wonder is how many blogs have posts asking "why does David Simon hate America?"

No shit. I heard some private security experts (former State Dept, turned corporate consultant types) on NPR yesterday effusively agreeing with one another regarding the efficacy of profiling in airports as the only way to save us from further attacks. They readily agreed that this meant subjecting twenty-something brown skinned males to much more scrutiny than the rest of us -- apparently Israel does something along these lines. Regardless of any theoretical merits of such a plan, who here has confidence in the ability of our current crop of TSA professionals to implement anything along these lines without seriously fucking things up? The NPR host brought up Timothy McVeigh and raised the issue of unlawful discrimination but the experts didn't seem too concerned.
